I have a outboard engine for a boat but I'm not sure if it's a 2 or 4 stroke. All I know is that it has 6 spark plugs. How can I tell?

A four stroke motor has an oil sump that is filled with oil. A two stroke motor has no oil sump and oil is added to the fuel, usually petrol. Regardless of the number of cylinders.

How old is this motor? If it is new enough to be a 4-stroke (only readily available for about the last 10 years) it will have an i.d. plate that you could check up on from the manufacturers website. If it is a pretty old unit, it is 99.9% that it's a 2-stroke.

If you add 2-cycle oil to a 4-cycle engine's fuel it would still run, but poorly. If you run a 2-cycle engine without mixing oil with the fuel, it would seize the engine. Mix a gallon at 50:1 and run the motor with it if you are still unsure.
