I've read it several times. And for a long, long time it was my favourite novel. I know it's not for everyone (some people find reality magical enough and have no need for meagical realism) but I think the hypnotic nature of its episodes create an amplification of Latin America (or maybe a distillation is better?) You could probably reconstruct the history and peoples of Latin America from this one book, it encapsulates it all. Deservedly seen as a world classic - less a novel, more an event.
