Glass eyes today are made from acrylic resin, they are created with an artist who matches the colour of the eyes, the veins in the eyes etc. In addition to this fibers are attached to the eye to add 3 dimensional appearence to the veins in the eyes. Plaster molds are taken of the eye socket so the shape of the fake eye matches the socket of the owner. A modern false eye would be hard to notice due to the above reasons however an older eye with perhaps less artistic input may have been easier to spot. My father once knew someone with an actual glass eye.

It's pretty simple. An artificial eye, no matter how artfully crafted, does not move like a normal eye. It does not change position or follow moving objects like the natural eye, and therefore creates a different facial expression.
