  • Lakes Erie and Ontario are sometimes considered to be the most polluted Great Lakes because they are by far the smallest of the lakes, have many people living around them, and are the last lakes in the system of basins. This means that they receive a portion of the contaminants from each of the other lakes. Phosphorous, bacterial contamination (by E. coli and others), and persistant organic pollutants (POPs) are particularly hazardous forms of water pollution in the Great Lakes as well as other water supplies around the world. http://www.great-lakes.net/teach/chat/answers/062501_mostpolluted.html Gawd, thanks for the question, Galeanda. This is what we need on AB ;)
  • Since I grew up in Western New York I am an expert at this one. Lake Erie was so bad at one time that I remember the urban legend about Cleveland how the lake caught on fire so it's definitely this lake and I wanted to say Michigan but my research tells me that it is Ontario so I was shocked to hear that. I'd imagine Michigan due to all the heavy industrialization around it. http://www.epa.gov/grtlakes/aoc/ ' In the basin of Lake Michigan and nearby lakes industrial plants not in compliance amount to 44% in Canada and only 7% in USA. In hazardous waste treatment facilities, out of 350 different chemicals only 62 are regulated by EPA. In Ontario out of 1200 municipal sewage treatment plants only 154 are regulated, International Joint Commission has 350 hazardous pollutants on its list. These include 11 critical ( TCDD, PCB, TCDF,DDT, mirex, and PAH which are not regulated) and 124 priority pollutants.' • Lakes Erie and Ontario . They are polluted by people living around them.
  • lake erie and ontoniobecause the population around them
  • I don't know for certain, but I would say that Lake Erie and Lake Ontario are the most polluted for a few reasons: 1) They have the most population living around them. 2) They are the smallest lakes. 3) They are the lakes furthest downstream and all the stuff from the other lakes potentially ends up there.
  • I think lake ontario because in the summer you don't have to even be near the lake and you can smell it! and you can tell that its polluted just by looking at it.and the grossest part about it is that theirs some people that actually go swimming in it!
