I have no idea why this is under the "Ancient Religions" section. Wicca is a little over 50 years old. Yes, it is BASED upon ancient pre-Christian religions, but so is Christianity BASED upon Judaism. It doesn't make it the same religion.

As for the number worldwide, that is very difficult to say. Numbers on religious adherents are gathered through polling organizations. The majority of Wiccans are solitary practitioners. (To illustrate the problem, I'm still technically a member of two Christian churches, who probably report me as a Christian. However, many Christians attend who are not members.) ReligiousTolerance.org gives several numbers for Wiccans. You can click on the link to view where the numbers originate. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 150,000 in the US is not unreasonable, and is probably low. Worldwide, it is hard to say. Most say that about 1 million is reasonable. We have sizable populations in the US, Canada, Europe, and Australia.

In the United States alone, the estimates of
Wiccans is said to be from 50,000 to 300,000.

A problem with finding an even somewhat exact answer to this question is that many Wiccans/Pagans do not announce or claim to be so on surveys or to their neighbors/coworkers because of the persecution many of them still face by the misinformed masses. Once Wicca becomes a bit more accepted in today's society, a clearer answer should be available.

I can tell you that in the National Religious Identification Survey of 2008 it was stated that Wicca was the fastest growing religion at that time - believed to be doubling its membership once about every 20 months or so. If that same rate remained the same for 4 more years, it was stated that Wicca could have the potential to be the U.S.'s third largest religion - displacing Islam.

All Wiccans are also Pagan, which is the oldest religion in the world. Not all Pagans though are Wiccan. Wicca is a form of Paganism, just like being Baptist/Pentecost/Catholic etc is a form of Christianity. So the real question should be, How many Pagans are there in the world if you are comparing it to the other major religions.

I am both, and also live in a small town in the Southeast US, where Pagans are in larger numbers than you would think. Biggest problem about getting an exact number is most keep this part of their life a secret, I am one those exceptions. I am not only proud of my spiritual life but will fight for its rights.

I have been a practicing Witch/Pagan for over a year, and am in my late 30's.
