In my experience, steroids have been given after the onset of an MS exacerbation, but they don't always work for everyone with MS. I have heard of any other treatments with the same effect. However, there are medications that are supposed to help prevent attacks and progression of the disease - like Avonex, Copaxone, Betaseron and Rebif, but they don't do the same thing. The steroids given for MS have some nasty side-effects, but they work for some people.
