  • I am a professional singer and what I do before I perform is drink a glass of milk or a yogurt this lines the throat and will result in clear smooth notes. The warm-ups I do are a basic scale Do Re Mi....... and return and I keep going up a note each time until I reach my highest note and vice versa. It is very important not to strain your voice as this can result in a hoarse throat. Always do it in chest voice. And always if you have to strain you voice while in head voice you have gone too high. Stick to your own vocal range! [Added on 12 Sep 2004] I would just like to add to the coment in which I made earlier, Dairy products form a phlegm in the back of the throat so this may not suit everyone!!! I however find this a good method. But don't take my word for it. Some find drinking a warm drink benifits them.
  • Actually, drinking any dairy product like yogurt, ice cream, or milk, will cause your voice to sound muffled because consuming dairy products increases mucus production. It is never a good idea to consume dairy as a warm up for vocal techniques.
  • I don't drink milk any more for that main purpose. I am a coloratura, or almost one, and am studying to be a classical singer. Milk may make your voice sounds smooth, but it makes it less clear. That's because it basically coats the cords in phlegm and mucus. Stick with water! It's healthier and doesn't leave a nasty aftertaste! Sparrow
  • For men, tenors in particular: The best one to develop vocal strength is singing "ee" vowels in scales going up to high notes. This is exactly how Pavarotti claims to have developed his vocal strength -- he calls it e-chor. Do the usual 5-note scale, or a triad if this is too difficult. Start low and work your way up past your break point into your head voice. DO NOT USE FALSETTO -- you will never gain vocal strength using this weak mechanism. Pavarotti sang e-chor until the day he retired. Then rest a few minutes and do it one more time. Stop. Sing scales on "ahh" and "ae" a few times low to high. AGAIN ---NO FALSETTO. Then sing a song. Don't sing more than every other day for about 1 hour per session. You will be amazed at how fast your voice will develop it's strength and agility if you adhere to a precise excercise regimen. Remember, it aint easy -- which is why so few can do it right.
  • A good exercise is sitting against the wall (without a chair) and singing. I builds up a lot of muscles where they're needed. Sing while runnning (it helps for when you're nervous). Do a yawn breath and sigh. (1. Yawn and rememinded keep your whole mouth in that position. 2. Breathe 3. Sing a high note and slide down like a sigh to a low one keeping your mouth still, and your should feel a buzzing on your nose the entire time. (If your doing it right, it should feel good.) Raise your eyebrows when singing. Sing upside down. (It helps brighten the voice.) Don't consume dairy the day of a performance. Drink water that's room temperature. Never use anything to numb a sore throat and sing. (If you can't feel it, you don't know what you're doing to your voice.)

  • 1) Listen carefully to the song you are going to sing 2) Remember the pitch, note and rhythm of the song 3) Exercises to do: * make your lips circular and articulate OOOhhhhhh aammmmmmmmmm the sound will be 'OM' this will tone both your diaphragm and your head voice * put a pencil in your mouth, clutch it with your teeth and now sing the song... the tongue should be under your pencil and the pencil should be vertically placed parallel to the ground * produce Shhhh! sound in different notes * become emotional... This will really help and you will eventually become a very great singer... just be emotional... what I mean is that you should be able to deliver your emotions to your audience * Make a girlfriend as she will motivate you and also help you acquire passions, feelings and emotions... so next time you sing a love song ... sing it to her Peeyush Malhotra Gurdaspuria GURGAON INDIA
