What is Dry Socket from a tooth extraction, & how can I prevent it besides not somking? If dry socket occurs, is there a way to treat it without going to the dentist?

My dentist explained it to me a couple months ago. Your socket should form a clot to keep it from bleeding. If you smoke or use a straw, you could suck the clot out and it will start bleeding again. By keeping the gauze in it and not spitting, it should clot ok. He also said that if you do get one, they used to go in and make it bleed again to form another clot but now they know it will eventually heal on it's own.
