Most of the experienced officers in the Army before the Civil War got that experience fighting in the Mexican-Amercan war and most of the troops that fought in that war were from the Southern States. So, the Confederacy had most of the experienced officers and the Union had the resources. ************* "James McClister: Yes..I agree..General Lee was quite the Genius:" Yes, he was. Here is an interesting bit of trivia for you. Abraham Lincoln first offered command of the Union Army to Robert E. Lee. Lee said that he would have to see which way his home state of Virginia went before he would accept. Had Lee either been from that part of Virginia that became West Virginia or had he been more loyal to the Union than his state. Things may have gone very different in the Civil War.
  • The Union was much more industrialized and found it much easier to produce weapons. They had a more diverse economy and a stronger currency. As mentioned, the Union had a far larger pool of men to draw from. More slaves fought for the North than the South, and these slaves certainly were more motivated.
