neither dogs or people really need the ACL. It does stabilize the knee but plenty of people and dogs live happily w/o it. My old dog tore both of her hind leg ACL's and was totally fine. At 12 yrs old I wouldn't subject her to surgery. Give her 6-8 weeks. She may limp for 3-4 weeks but as long as she keeps moving around and is happy I would let her heal and she'll be jogging around in 8 weeks or so. FYI she may have an issue if she does a quick change of direction while running (ACL not there to stabilize the knee) but she will recover easily and if she stays active she will keep the other muscles strong which also help to stabilize the knee. Good Luck!
