I know, I was thinking the same thing. :(
-
It was still decent when I showed up. I like to think it's all my fault.
-
Well, simply because it's a web-based community. Everything on the internet gets bastardized from its intended purpose, unfortunately. That's what you get when you live in an anonymous democracy.
-
We can only work with what's presented I suppose.
-
i am noticing that my own questions are becoming more and more simplistic, and ready made for lots of answers ergo points, and i am not proud of this fact
-
Ask an intelligent question we'll all take it from there.
-
I've found that if you want to ask or answer intelligent queustions, you have to go to a specific area, not outside the bag. However, you don't get responses.
-
it's because people don't like to think. questions like "what did you eat for supper today" get lots of points where as serious questions are ignored. and in some cases, it's because some people are afraid to tackle the controversial issues for fear that their ideas may be attacked. so you stick with "what's your favorite food" and you're ok. lot less explaining, lot less thinking, a lot less likely to be attacked and questioned. I'm not saying i agree with it im just saying that's how it is sometimes

When Answerbag started using the "points" system, it turned the site into a video game played by, you guessed it, bantering mindless juveniles.

The term is devolved. And Yes, it has.

Thanks Slim, good question. We are seeing way to few of these lately. I have noticed several questions that I try to put extra thought and effort into are ignored while questions, like what color is your b/f bike, or if I have missed my period 3 months in a row do you think I might be pregnant, even better I found this pill.................Oh well you see where this is going. I going to sit back and get ready for the trolls now. Hope I see more thought provoking question in the future!

When was it....that first thing you said? I don't remember...
-
Tks.

Hey slim746 aren't we testy today? I have two words for you...fill in the blanks __I love _________YOU.

It went downhill I believe after this question was asked. How long does it take for a grasshopper to kick the seeds out of a dill pickle spear?
-
For the same reason that the Internet itself has. In the old days, only a select few (mostly intellectuals) were on the 'net. Now EVERYBODY and their hamster is. In the slightly-less-old days, AB was an obscure site. Now it's a bit more well-known.
-
I think it is a natural progression, but I don't like it. All I can do to try and get it to swing back to intelligent exchange is ignore the idiot questions and try to give answers to questions that took some thought or have a real need. I see this happening with more and more long time ABers. Perhaps if we all did this, the juvenile users will get bored with each other and go back to Facebook. Or we can figure out some way to separate them from the serious ones on here. Or, maybe we will find that we can live with them by simply ignoring them.

Joel called it becoming "self aware" in his blog last year. I call it commercialization. Demand Media loves the attention (money) it brings. http://www.answerbag.com/blog/comments/158 I've been petitioning for a name change to reflect the actual use of the site - to Dear AB.

It has indeed lost a lot. It's OK to have a fun question every one in a while (e.g. what was your favorite game show) but it is quickly losing its reputation as a place for getting serious information, a place for learning. I can go through many screens of questions before I find one where someone is seriously looking to learn or needs help in doing something or in finding something.
