  • There were wars waged upon Troy but the legend is accepted to be a mixture of these wars rolled into one. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trojan_war#Historicity_of_the_Trojan_War
  • The remains of the city of Troy show that it suffered damage and was rebuilt many times over hundreds of years. Archaeological evidence does show that the remains currently identified as Troy were destroyed around the time the Trojan Wars supposedly occurred. In the end, though, there's still an enormous amount of debate over this. Personally, I suspect that there was a real Troy and there was at least one war, possibly more, between those living in Troy and the surrounding area and colonizing Greeks. Beyond that, how much of the story as told in the Iliad is true is, I think, mostly conjecture.
