Wow, I hope the family finds some great ways to spend their millions. That's a shame, and I do send my heart out to the family.

I smell lawsuit and rightly so.

Harborview Medical Center told him she wouldn't put in his paperwork for transplant consideration at UW until he avoided pot for six months, Hiatt said. The university soon offered to reconsider if he enrolled in a 60-day drug-treatment program, but his liver disease was too advanced by then for him to last that long, doctors told him. The university-hospital committee agreed to reconsider its decision, then denied him again. One one hand, he was told to stop, if he wanted it, on the other hand, they kept playing games, saying, that they would reconsider, so I think they should sue them. They keep contradicting their selves. **Example: "Although medical marijuana may be an issue in rare cases, it is never the sole determinant in arriving at medical decisions about candidates for organ transplants, and whether a patient is listed. Patients with a reasonable chance of survival and a good outcome, given a variety of factors, are listed."

That's an outrage! Why should his smoking habits effect his right to have a necessary and life saving surgery?
-
They could have made the same ruling if it were legal alcohol that the patient was consuming.

I am sure there is more to this that it first appears. There are many reasons why people are denied transplants, and some of them have to do with lifestyle. The sad fact is that some people are poor risks for transplants, and that others have better chance of living. If there were plenty of organs to give out, these sorts of decisions would not have to be made. In some countries, every person is automatically an organ donor unless they opt out. This ensures many more organs for transplants and fewer hard decisions that hospitals have to make.

Well the face that this took place near me was a shocker! I do not think that was right for them to deny him because there is no law about that. I feel sorry for his family, he just sounded like he had a lot of medical problems and wanted some help.

Getting a liver transplant is not an easy task. No matter what the excuse was for him not getting someone's liver, there are lots and lots of variables to line up before a liver will fit into another person's body. The line is very long for liver transplants. Generally you have to survive your ailment just to get one.
-
There are so many people waiting for liver transplants they are going to give it to the ones that have the highest probablity of not regecting or messing up the liver. There are strict guidelines and he did not follow them. The liver goes to the person who follows the guidelines. If they gave him the liver over someone who did follow the guidelines they would definitely get sued and loose. Although it is medical marijuana, he was told the conditions of a transplant were to stop smoking, he didn't, so he doesn't have a case. He lost the transplant because of his actions. He could have started smoking again after he got it.

That is criminal. Medical marijuana is non toxic, and not physically addicting. This happened in my hometown. He was legal under state law. His doctors knew. The only reason it is found so much is the fat stores in patients release THC for a loong time, especially a sick person who is losing weight. They gave him the impression that they would be okay with it, turned around and and denied the transplant. This should not have happened in a state that has returned pot and replaced the cost of legal grow equipment that were taken in illegal state raids. The cases are on file for anyone who wants to pursue.

Jeeee, good for him >.>"

That is extremely sad. :(

The reason he was not allowed a transplant was possibly for the following reason. You should not smoke cigarettes, cigars, pipes or marijuana!!!! Smoking narrows your blood vessels which can be harmful to your liver and kidneys. Smoking also makes you predisposed to lung infections. Marijuana causes your levels for your anti-rejection medications, i.e. Neoral and Prograf to be very low, which could lead to rejection. Marijuana also grows a fungus, known as Aspergillus, which can cause death in the transplanted patient!!!!
