In Alberta, Canada, the leaves on the trees don't change color until they have frozen several times. Last night was the first frost but the leaves have been changing for over a week already. Could the trees know we are going to have an early winter?

Tree leaves change colors based mostly on the changing amount of sunlight they get. It also depends on the breed; relatives called up to us in North Dakota and suggested driving up to see the fall colors. "You like tan and brown?" we said. That's all you get from cottonwoods and box elder maples.
