  • The corrosion product is aluminum oxide. As aluminum oxidizes it forms this hard layer of aluminum oxide. Chemically you can remove it with phosphoric acid (available at Home Depot or Lowes). But the surface will still be rough. If you want it to look nice you need to polish the metal until it's smooth. Many products are available at any auto store. Aluminum is a soft metal so it is easy to polish. For heavy corrosion I'd clean with scotch brite then finish off with a metal polish.
