It is certainly not one of the criteria to make a culture a "high" culture. Religion has has devastating effects in many cultures - compare the history of the Incas, or the history of Medieval Europe for that matter. the list is very long. I hope that in our age, enlightenment and tolerance will prevail, and religion will be a private matter.
