  • I use the same rule of thumb for pets as I do for people: if their eyes constantly plead with me, I let them go.
  • if they are not in pain and still seem happy then leave them be.
  • If my pet was still happy and not in pain, I think all the companionship and love it had given me over the years would make it worth cleaning up any potty messes and lifting it up stairs or whatever it needs. Once it becomes apparent that pain is present and it is no longer enjoying life, I would be merciful and let it go.
  • I personally would not put a happy pet down. If it's happy despite the pain, then it should be left to live the rest of it's life. How old is it? What type of pet?
  • If I can afford to make them comfortable and if they still have a measure of quality of life, we do whatever we can to keep them that way. We've even placed a T-shirt on one old dog that we used to hold her up so she could have her walks in the yard. She was still a huge dog, over 110 lbs, so it took some doing but it made her happy. The stairs were a nightmare, but it's what we could do, just once a day, to bring her joy.
  • since you just described me, guess i'm going to need to reconsider this carefully
  • Well only you can decide. But if he's happy...
  • When the time comes it's obvious. The duty is to the creature, not to the owner. That's why we have pets - to cherish them.
  • Let's see I have a 14 year old cat, one of her eye's is twice the size as it should be, kinda look's like it's going to pop at any time. Took her to the vet. They said there was no pressure and no pain (can't see out of it) but other then that she just fine. So I'm keeping her and loving her. point's for ya Jenn :)
  • All the Best to you and your dog..I love dogs and would do anything to keep the dog with me...But still there would be a question whether he/she is happy or in pain.Depending on that we(me n my husband) would decide
  • As others have suggested it all depends on their quality of life...if you are being honest with yourself, you will know when that time comes, your pet will tell you when it's their time.
  • OK. I'm sure you're doing the right thing.
  • Hmmm so tough... I always remember that movie with the kid from Malcolm in the Middle and how he wanted the Jack Russell and the Father said no, I thought how mean of him. Yet the Dad knew that it was not the living part it was the dying part that kills ya.... I have a 16 year old he has no teeth cannot hear and not really sure how much he can see. He pees anywhere he wants and wanders off when he goes out and does not really like to climb stairs. Yet he eats he drinks he barks at the other little guy from time to time and loves his treats and his snuggles so we spend a great deal of time cleaning up and knowing as long as he is moving along he is still part of the family. Best of luck to you
