  • They can be foraging for shallow plants or making little nests for themselves. Cottontail rabbits don't make deep burrows like European rabbits which make complicated warrens deep in the earth. Cottontails are know as shallow nesters, just making little depressions in the ground, usually under shrubs or brush.

  • The lagomorph group can be split into 3 main groups, Rabbits, hares and pikas. Mainly hares and some rabbits make nests above ground, often in the open or near the base of shrubs and hedges. The remainder of the group live in burrows or crags in rocks. All also remove the top soil or grass from an area and roll in the dirt. A way of treating the fur perhaps as other mammals do to help control mites and parasites. However this appears to be only a theory as i have found no conclusive evidence: Andy Hennegan - Fat Fluffs Rabbit Rescue
