Is violence a bad thing or is it sometimes good? I know violence like war and rape is very important for the purposes of conquering and dominating.

Firstly, Rape is not an important part of war. It is uneccessary and wrong. Secondly, violence is only good because people are to greedy to settle...it is just that to end violence sometimes we have to use violence...

Even if rape has been part of war, that doesn't mean it is moraly correct and should continue to be used in war. Rape is not tolerated in this country!

violence is a last resort;in a situation where a despot is oppressing the majority of people,violence is justified. rape on the other hand is a tool to demoralize your enemies, but is never justified. an army attacking the people would be fighting the majority opinion, which would then be oppressing the people, so the violence wouldn't be justified. so violence can be justified;rape cannot.

As an overall moral issue violence is wrong. Unfortunately as mentioned before by Mr McClister it is often the only 'option' left in order protect the greater good. However, on a smaller scale I'm sure we can all think of situations where it is justified and so can be argued as to be good. For example you are walking down a dark alley with your partner (I mean, how cliched can you get?) can someone tries to attack you. I can't see any alternative to violence as a way to protect the one you love, and so it could be argued that it is morally right. Some may take this further and say it is morally good, for example as a way to stop the guy attacking other people in future, so it divides public opinion.

The only thing I have observed is that wars sometime unify groups or break down barriers between groups of people. Civil wars especially. I guess it is a good result from a bad thing.

Rape is always wrong. No exceptions, ever, no ifs, ands, or buts. That is a moral absolute. Rather than saying that violence is "sometimes good," let's just say that war is sometimes the lesser of two evils.

I agree with your theory that such violence is importent if one desires to conquer thy enemies...but that by far doesn't make it 'good'. It's a sad fact of life that there are so many people who feel the need to scald and end lives for their own beliefs and ignorance. This is why I became spiritual--to beleive they will go to hell.
