It was a very common expression back in the 1950's. My cousin started using it in Colorado after she spent a week at a California beach resort. It spread like wildfire, and this was before the internet.

Being born and raised in California I dont really remember a time when we didnt use the term Dude. Im 41 now and still use it. I do beleive the wide spread use of it came from Fast Times at Ridgemont High,
