I'd consider going down to the 'charity' and drop kicking the one responsible.

If you had given in good faith, and had done some research to assure you that your money would be used well, and yet it wasn't, you can only say that you tried. However, the problem is that most people don't do the research, to find out the credentials of the charities they give to, their overheads, their reliability, their track records. So, in that sense, when the money goes astray, it is, sadly, wasted. What is worse, though, is that the good charities then suffer because of the bad press given to those who rip off the public. We have one that has gone bad in Sydney Australia at the moment. Very wealthy individuals have poured a lot of money into it, and the head has been gambling with the money. Nor are there any proper books. I am shocked at this though. Being involved with a church, I know the auditing we go through, and the hoops we have to jump through each year. Yet this charity, a non-Church one, has not been doing its books for several years now.

I would consider it a donation in good faith and a lesson learned. Check this answer out: http://www.answerbag.com/a_view/3452830 It contains a link you will find EXTREMELY helpful in finding genuine charities, what their mission statement is, and what percentage of your donation would go towards their administrative costs.

First---If you suspect an organization or a company has not treated you fairly-- you could file a complaint against them explaining you situation. There are many public agencys free of charge that do these services. Also in most usa states there are what is called a consumer protection division also free services part of the Attorney General Offices. They deal with; dishonesty; fraud; and many other things I dont have the space to list. (The Attorney General Office I know of has helped me out many times. Some of those times I got products back and sometimes I was refunded. I cant afford to just sweep it under the rug so I use free legal services. take care
