People have been slicing bread for centuries. If you mean packaged sliced bread, it came about after the invention of a bread slicer by a man from Iowa, USA, Otto Rohwedder. The patent was issued in 1932. Rohwedder had to convince bakers that the packaged sliced bread wouldn't dry out. A baker in Missouri decided to take a chance on packaged sliced bread and it caught on, Improvements to the slicer followed, and Wonder Bread emerged! People liked having a standardized size of bread slices, particularly since the pop-up toaster had become an addition to many kitchens.
