actually, he opened for the monkees! he started mid -tour and after playing "foxy lady"and hearing jeers of " we want the monkees" he flipped of the crowd and walked off stage!!! http://www.snopes.com/music/artists/hendrix.asp

The Monkees picked The Hendrix Experience to open for them. They loved Hendrix's music and Hendrix was not yet popular in the USA.
