  • It's a revenge story where an innocent guy escapes from prison, finds treasure, rejoins society as a rich man & finally sticks it to the bad guys who framed him. There was a movie version in 2002.
  • I think I saw the French version with Gerard Depardueueueue (I can never spell it. The one with the nose). Short and sweet: Well off, upcoming dude is betrayed in a hard-up way. Gets sent to a dungeon, stripped of title and possessions, meets an old codger in the prison who tells him of a vast treasure. Old codger helps him escape by letting dude pretend to be the dead guy. Once he's out, he goes to where the (vast) fortune is located and stocks up. He then seeks revenge for his betrayal, and has many adventures on the way home. He calls himself the Count of Monte Cristo, and nobody he knew recognises him (from his long suffering in jail). There's a lot of killing, retirbution and politics involved. I think his missus married another dude (although she does recognise him). Just thinking about it, it's kind of similar to "The Crow" or "Hang 'em High" what with the whole revenge thing going. But there are heaps of characters, each with their little sub-plots and story lines. I'd like to read the book one day. If I had two hours to rub together...
