Are modern parents needlessly overprotective, or is the world a more complicated and dangerous place than it was when previous generations were allowed to roam unsupervised?

The world is more complicated and dangerous then it was with previous generations. You hear about more children being kidnapped. More violence. Not to mention kids are now killing kids in schools on the street because they want to know what it feels like to take a life. So no I don't think that todays parents are being over protective.

It is a dangerous place, more so than when I was a kid. I don't see little kids collecting soda cans and taking them to the store when they are under 10 years old and we used to do that. And you didn't worry about strangers like you do now. Plus their peers are more likely to influence them in a negative way. TV is worse, games are more grownup and adult nature. Kids don't stay kids as long, so you have to change your methods with the time. I only wish parents wold think more and protect sooner, especially by instilling more common sense in their kids at an earlier age, not waiting to clamp down when they are teens. That's just not fair.
