  • Giant Breeds, such as the Great Dane, Irish Wolfhound, and St. Bernard...others as well...are elderly by about 7. Many do not live past 9. There are always exceptions to every "rule" and some have been known to live to be 10.. I've known one St. Bernard and one Wolfhound that were each 12 when they had to be put down. I had a crossbred retriever, that would qualify as a giant at 38 inches at the shoulder and 110lbs. Bossco lived to be 13 when I had to have him put to sleep...I was blessed to have him so long.
  • I was going to say they are OLD by 6-8, and if they live til 9-10 you are doing well, and they probably have very painful hip joints and other problems.
  • I have 3 Great Danes in my House hold currently, The father of the litter is now 9 years old and runs up and down stairs, still loves to play and is very energetic, large breed dogs do have shorter life spans than smaller dogs, but it all circles back in to how you take care of your dog, controlling how heavy they get is going to determine how long they live, we have kept a close eye on my Dane’s weight and exercise him daily, they are couch potatoes so it has to come from you to make sure he gets enough exercise and you should have a long living happy dogs, great Danes are just a joy to have around if you can get past having a dog look you in the eye on its hind legs (I'm 6'5" tall) :)
