Venezuela is an exporter of oil. Chavez subsidizes the oil for his people.

Why do residents in Alaska get a rebate for petroleum taken from their land? Same kinda thing. Why are apples cheap in the US, but expensive in Puerto Rico. And why are mangoes cheap in PR but expensive in the US?

Because the set gas prices by how much they think they can make a certain demographic target pay. So because they know we being suckers will buy it anyway, they rape us at the pump. Normal People: "Hey Oil Companies, stop gouging us!" Oil Companies: "Hah! What are you gonna do? Not buy it?" Normal People: "I wish I could, but I need it..." Oil Companies: "I wish I could lower the prices, but we don't set the price, the Market does..." Normal People: "Is the market as hard on you as it is on us?" Oil Companies: "Quite the contrary, when you suffer we post record profits! We wish we could help you we really do, but them's the brakes I guess..." Normal People: "Sigh" Oil Companies: "Hmmm, well if its any consolation there are some who can get free gas... Me."
