1. We sing because his Spirit fills us. Notice in Ephesians that the filling of the Spirit comes before singing. Without the inspiration of the Holy Spirit within me, my singing will never become praise. 2. We sing because his Word indwells us. Whereas Ephesians emphasises being filled by the Spirit, Colossians emphasises being filled by the Word. (The reality is that both go together.) Unless God's word is at truly at work inside me and being reflected in my music, my heart and mind will not be re-formed into God's image. 3. We sing for the rich diversity of the experience. Paul gives three types of songs appropriate for God. Firstly, psalms--that are the songs found in the Old Testament. Secondly, hymns--that are the songs that Christians have been writing over the last 2000 years reflecting biblical themes. And thirdly, spiritual songs--that David Jeremiah suggests were more spontaneous songs. All three types of songs reflect different aspects of our Christian experience. 4. We sing to rejoice. As Paul notes, we sing with thanks or gratitude. This is another prerequisite to singing, otherwise, singing will become dull and feel like a chore!

Singing is a social binding thing. It binds together those of like background or culture or religious view. eg Christians sing because there has been a long history of thanking God in song. Singing during worship binds the congregation together. Even Christians from other congregations often know songs in common, and songs get translated from language to language, so you can even sing alongside other Christians from anywhere in the world.
