Not an intelligent one. But all is not lost! If you have a job...get a written letter of reference from your boss or the owner of the company you work for that states how long you've been there, how amazing you are, how much they appreciate the quality of your work and that they look forward to having you work there as long as possible...show that you have job (income) security). Any other funds you have access to such as Child Support, Spousal Support...any other money at all...get proof of these funds. Make lots of copies and YOU keep the originals...(since the work letter will also serve as a dandy letter of referral whenever you might be planning to change jobs!) Attach a concise letter that you write up explaining NOT THE EMOTIONAL BS of your divorce, but THE FINANCIAL misdeeds that have been attached to YOU because of marriage. As soon as you can, apply for a credit card in your name. You may have to start out with a SECURED CARD that you put maybe $300 to $1000 down on initially. You want to USE this card for small things that you can EASILY pay off EVERY SINGLE MONTH...do not carry a "balance" on the card. By doing this you'll re-establish that you ARE a good Credit Risk and it will help to clean up your credit in YOUR NAME. Also...any other professional people you have OWED AND PAID off in an agreed upon timely manner...hit them up for a short letter too. Doctors, Dentists, Lawyers, Plumbers...your Vet, if you have pets, if you paid them ask for a letter; or WRITE A SHORT NOTE that states how much you owed and that you paid them in full as you agree to and within the time agreed upon! You might also be able to get a letter from your bank, unless you've had a flock of NSF checks; then forget that. I've rented to people with less than perfect credit before....as long as they had proof of current and on-going employment...and offered me a reasonable explanation as to why their credit isn't as clean as they would like...AND NOT A ONE OF THOSE FOLKS EVER... SCREWED ME OVER EITHER!!!! They were great tenants, took good care of my house and also kept me in the loop if something came up that would make their payment a few days late...they were WONDERFUL people...(about 2 or 3 total). One of the ones with sterling credit...TRASHED MY HOUSE AND COST ME ABOUT $8000 over the $2000 deposit... So...much for perfect credit! Be honest...keep your chin up...and hopefully good things will come your way soon! I hope so!
