Should the Old Testament in the Bible be taken literally or just as a guide?

If you read the Old Testament you will find that it is made up of various forms of genre. There is history which is to be taken literally, poetry or song which is a mixture of history and allegory. There is apocalytic writings and prophesies that need to be analysed and taken as written. Then there are commands from god which need to be obeyed.

I would possibly use some verses as a guide that I interpreted myself.Even fairy tales have profound things to be learned.
