It probably has more to do with parents passing on their fears. If you freak out around then your kids will too. Phobias are learned. I personally am not afraid of snakes but I don't play with them either. I didn't know my parents were afraid of snakes until I was much older. They never had a snake around them while I was growing up to be afraid of hence I have no particular fear of them. Why this effects more Blacks as a common fear I have two theories: 1) Most Blacks are Christian or descended from Blacks that adhered to Christianity and in the Bible the villainy and inherent evil of snakes and serpents is stressed ergo this mentality is drilled in from birth 2)Black slaves worked in the fields, snake bites were known to kill, the slaves warned their offspring to beware of snakes *Or some combination of the two Just guessing anyways. Another example of fear being learned: My Brother's Goddaughter would occasionally fall like all toddlers do and my brother's response was to laugh and tell her to brush herself off. And that's what she did. However when she fell in front of her mother, her mother would panic so she would cry. One time she fell in front of my brother and her mother and she didn't know what to do. She wasn't sure if she should cry or not. If you teach your kids to remain calm then they will because they take their cues from you unless they are really sensitive.
