  • Tough to say, but consisder this, it is estimated that in a typical French dictionary there are about 35,000 words. Of those words, roughly 12 percent (4,200) of common French words are of foreign origin.
  • There are three words in the French language-"the", "French" and "language" :)
  • If you pick up the book "Essential French Grammar" you will find a list of useful English/French cognates. If your English vocab is quite good, you already know over 3,000 French words. You will need to remove their baseball cap and replace it with a beret, but they are there. Thank you, William the Conqueror and your Norman buddies.
  • My multilingual translation dictionary database has 312,908 words in the French dictionary, and I doubt if that is ALL of them.
