Williamsburg, Virginia or perhaps Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.

Jamestown, NY. It's close enough to several big cities (if you change your mind), as well as a number of interesting attractions.

A nice place was Sugarcreek, OH. Amish land and a lot of nice history. Though, don't plan to spend more than a day there.

See the mountains and the desert: Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Arizona are authentic Americana with beautiful small towns everywhere, and the option to avoid people altogether if you wish.

wow, nothing like setting your sights low. How about Federal Way or White Center, or maybe Wild Waves or the International Toaster Museum in Seattle.
