  • The only problem, I see, is some people are dyslexic, or not able to spell properly, due to disabilties, etc, it might embarrass them. That would be amusing to see what they would replace the curse words with. I dont think people came on this site for an english lesson.
  • I think its a fantastic idea. However I dont think anyone has the time or the inclination to take on such a monumental task such as that, it would takes hordes of people.
  • There used to be enough people working for AB to vet every question, but now there aren't. It would be nice if Demand Media would be able to hire a staff to do the work, since AB is a cash cow for them, but I guess it isn't important to them.
  • G R A M M A R
  • ODG no! CLs have enough to do. I volunteered as a moderator (completely different role on AB than a CL) way back and we did exactly that. The traffic wasn't nearly as heavy and it was very hard to keep up with. Joel made the decision to let such corrections slide so people could have their own voice on AB. I agree that it should stay that way.
  • I fully agree, it gives us a ba image, plus I would like them to delete the question I asked, giving my phone number, and asking for prank calls... That was a mistake
  • I think it is a good idea. I believe that some of us would jump into the job, happily. Though, perhaps not enough of us. I think there are some questions worded and spelled in such a way that some of us can not make out what the person is asking. It would help that person recieve better answers if the question was made more clear. I do not think that someone who's question has been edited should have any public recognition as such. It should just appear as it's corrected form. Perhaps the person should be given notice, but it should not be a public notice (to avoid embarrassment). I think Answerbag should have an optional spellcheck feature for questions and answers. I do think that the CL's have enough to deal with already. Between the trolls and the people trying to start arguments, thier job is never done, and it cannot be easy. I think a new crop of ABer's would need to be selected for the position of editor. The fact that we have a limited time span to correct questions (and the fact that if we did not, some unscrupulous Aber's would change questions for the purpose of slighting the answers) means that there should be an outside entity to fix simple errors. If I had a misspelling I had not caught within the time span I would like to be able to ask someone to fix it. (example: (I did catch it in time) Once I asked a question regarding Mormon beliefs and I missed a letter, the word came out "moron"... I did NOT want to insult anyone, but had I not fixed it in time, it could have been very bad) Editors should not be allowed to correct thier own questions.
  • First, SOME people purposely misspell words for effect. Others may not, but have their own way of speaking, and their own style in asking questions. If all questions were "corrected", then all would look like they came from the same peoeple, right? Why would we want to do that? Second, SOME questions take up the whole space for questions as they are written (text-speak, mixes, etc.) WHO is to decide what to leave out so everything will be spelled correctly? Third, WHO decides on the style to be used? AP? UPI? American English? Australian English? British English? Don't you think it would alienate some people by changing what THEY consider as "correct" English to a given, specific style? Fourth, Most of us know that if you put a comma in different places in a sentence, you can change the meaning. WHO decides what that meaning is? And what if it's not the same as the questioner DID mean? Fifth, There are over 706,000 questions, at this point. (this one is 706,460.) It would take a slew of people weeks or months to correct that many. And that's not including the 4-5 required to keep up with the new questions. (If you don't have the last group, that Army would be required forever.) I don't think more than a few would volunteer to spend that much time correcting, so it would be paid positions, right? Well, who's going to pay them? Sixth, What about the answers and comments? THEY have the same "problems" (if you want to call them that). Are answers and comments NOT related to the questions to be removed? There's a LOT of insight in those threads. Who would decide on what gets removed/changed there? So, No. I don't think it can, will, or should be done.
  • Hmmm...It's a thought...Well, I found one: It's grammAr not grammEr. :P haha. Well, on the other hand, it's sometimes poor grammar, cursing, etc. what makes that question a question...or what makes a particular user that user. It's really impossible for CLs or "Editors" to know about each individual and what they're trying to get at with each question/answer.
  • Here's my personal opinion on this subject..we should not be the "Grammar" police..I think people should be allowed to ask questions in their own vernacular without being edited. This is not the world of "Big Brother"..if someone seeks assistance in improving, spelling, or syntax, or use of a word in its proper place, let that person ask first. Aren't we here to assist one another? Not with those things we believe we think they need but with what they actually need? Just my opinion (I was an English major, by the way)! :)
  • You are hired! Seriously, do CL's get paid? No. I don't think the owners of AB would be willing to pay anyone to do this type of work. I think they are lucky they get ABers to volunteer to be CL's.
  • I have noticed that alot of these questions can be answered by a click of Google. Though it wouldnt be quite as fun, would it? lol. As for having an Editor.. they would have to hire someone.. and that would be an awfully tedious job. ~+~
  • God. That's a huge work to do. Most of the newbies post questions in SMS language.
  • That's a great thought. It's be nice, especially the ones that you can barely read, of course, maybe they should be just deleted?
