  • I don't think he actually invented the toilet, he was more like a manufacturer of the modern day type toilet that we are familiar with today. He was Dutch.
  • This question was asked a few days ago, the answer is located here: http://www.answerbag.com/q_view.php/69771 Edit: Interseting that this garnered a negative rate. What a pitiful person.
  • Ah bless John Crapper, a wonderful man, truely. He helped come up with the phrase, right guys, where's the crapper. Brilliant! and probably not, but it makes a nice story
  • I think his name was thomas crapper (he invented the flushing toilet, not the toilet itself).
  • lmao!!!!
  • I hope he got a medal. I enjoy his work even today.
  • No the toilet was not invented by a guy named John Crapper you idiot, that is a joke. the toilet was invented by a guy named John Harrington in the renaissance
  • You are thinking of Thomas (not John) Crapper: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Crapper "Thomas Crapper did not invent all of the flush toilet — some credit for that is usually given to Sir John Harington in 1596, with Alexander Cummings' 1775 toilet regarded as the first of the modern line and George Jennings installing the first public toilets at The Great Exhibition in 1851 — but he did help increase its popularity. "
  • No, this is not not entirely true. First of all, his name was Thomas Crapper. Secondly, although Thomas was a plumber, he did not invent the toilet. He is credited with improving on the invention and for helping to make it popular. The toilet was invented by one of two others, Sir John Harrington (circa 1596) or Alexander Cummings whose design most closely resembles what we today affectionately refer to as "the crapper".
  • duh, of course he did. Why else would we say "crap", i gotta use the john and wheres the crapper.
  • NO, in thunder! I was friends with Sir Loyne Crapper's great-grandson, Lance Crapper. Lance was employed at the time as a tester for the company that made those "Jonny-on-The-Spot" portable loos, and he had quite a distinguished career there, before suffering an extended bout of constipation. They, of course, had to let him go. Whenever we would share a few glasses (bottles, really) of cheap Plonque, Lance would always start musing about how Sir Loyne had wished he had invented the toilet; he might have been rich. But alas, it was REALLY invented by a Welshman by the name of Theodore Toilet. Hence its name. Prior to this moving event, people had to defecate on their lawns, or if it was raining, on the living room floor, and then quickly cover it up with a throw rug. Sometimes, in the middle of the night, a bed was used, particularly if the defecator had drunk a tad too much Pinoqachole, which possesses moderate laxative effects. Fortunately, at about the same time, the carpet cleaner was invented by a man named William (Bill) Bissell. He went on to almost make a fortune, until of course, Teddy Toilet put him out of business. Incidentally, Sir Loyne, who was the brother of both Sir Thomas AND John, devised a personal-sized healthy-hamburger grill, but sadly never got around to patenting it. George Foreman recognized this, and subsequently seized the opportunity. Capitalism does make strange bedfellows, doesn't it?
  • no it was Thomas and the guy who invented the automatic flush was John Clapper - clap on - clap off - the clapper
  • Sir Loyne Crapper? Sounds weird. But I seem to recall meeting that guy Lance Crapper in Hollywood at a party many years ago. Geez- all he he could was talk about toilets, like some crazy computer nerd! Blah blah blah toilets toilet flush etc. What a bore! But he did make reference to his grand-dad "Sirloin"- I do remember this! I'll go with the "Ted Toilet" answer- sounds plausible to me.
  • no that is a myth John Harrington invented the toilet. Thomas Crapper invented the thing to make it flush. And he advertised it.
  • No not at all, there have been findings of flush toilets dating as far back as 2000 bc in Crete.
  • Silly! Crapper? I looked it up on Wikeepeedia and definitely it is Theodore Toilet who was the inventor. All you men are such BORES! I would hate to meet you at a party.
  • Mmmmm don't know who invented the thing but Crapper DID make and sell them in Victorian England - I know because I have one of his brochures and I have it framed on the wall in my loo. Very pretty it is too ...
  • hi,omg,is that true? or is the fellows name joe shitte.
  • Thomas Crapper (1836-1910) did exist and is credited with improving the functionality of the early flush toilet (or "water closet," as it was then called), but he did not, contrary to popular belief, invent the pseudo-eponymous bathroom appliance from scratch. Credit for that goes to 16th-century author Sir John Harrington, who not only came up with the idea but installed an early working prototype in the palace of Queen Elizabeth I, his godmother. The first patent for a flushing water closet was issued to Alexander Cummings in 1775, sixty years before Thomas Crapper was born. But this makes me out to be so Anal.....I wish he had....
  • i have to take a harrington....lmao!!!
