G'day Justin, Thank you for your question. It was probably felt to be the optimal period for the time. It should also be recognied that the length of the innings has increased over time. In 1900, the average game lasted for an hour and a half. By 1920, that was up to two hours. Today it is up to 3 hours with the target being 2 hours 45. According to Wikipedia "The lengthening of games is attributed to longer breaks between half-innings for television commercials, increased offense, more pitching changes, and a slower pace of play." Perhaps there is a case for looking at innings length although personally I like things the way they are. well technically there only have to be 5 or 5 1/2 innings played to complete a game, there could be a rain delay, then if X amount of innings played then the game is over!
