Go to Seattle. They have great things to do that are cheap. You can spend a day or two wandering Pike Place market. You can discover a bunch of small book stores. Taste different coffeeshops. Ride the ferry. Etc. Its great. ~+~

Hot Springs, Arkansas. Plenty to do and the prices are very cheap in the off-season for rooms and meals. Beautiful mountain scenery and parks everywhere. Not the hottest spot on the planet but good for avoiding overcrowding and overpriced amenities.

In the USA, I think Florida is great for its various venues and attractions and relatively cheap lodging while internationally, Mexico is tough to beat for price and variety also.
