I believe there has to be a contrast, even though beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and subject to personal preference & opinion.

I don't feel you need ugliness to find beauty. In a lovely grassy meadow, I can find the beauty of a single flower. I can find the beauty of someone inside without having seen the ugliness of men and been hurt by others. A baby recognizes a happy human face and smiles. It knows what looks right from the start.

You cannot have one with out the other, but both can be appreciated for what they are.

If beauty is subjective, then I guess we need its opposite to define it, and the other way around just as well.
