The sax is a great instrument to learn, but if I were you I'd want her to practice in the garage..lol..When I was learning my folks made me play in the garage. It was awful sounding at first..
-
Absolutely if she takes it seriously. A lot people can appreciate a good sax player.
-
Nah. I wouldnt.

not unless her bedrooms sound proof

I played the saxophone for eight years. I loved it. If she already plays clarinet, it's a pretty easy transition.
-
Yeah, if it's something she actually wants to do. Since you say she already plays clarinet, it sounds like not a bad idea, since the saxophone isn't too, too different.
-
Yes I would

I agree with everyone. I played clarinet and switched to sax - its such an easy transition! Not to mention more fun, saxophone has more of a groove than clarinet and is a blast to play. If she doesn't believe me, just tell her to try it out.

I played the clarinet for perhaps 6 years when I was asked to join the Jazz Ensemble in High School. I borrowed a tenor sax over the weekend and learned the fingering. On Monday I went to my first rehearsal and sightread the charts with no problem. I played clarinet in the orchestra and sax in the Jazz Ensemble (Stage Band) for the next 3 years. When I went back to college when I was 23 for music performance, I decided to major on the Alto Sax. The transition to Sax doesn't take too long. There's a difference in the embouchure where the lip isn't folded under as it is with the clarinet, but pushes upward and provides a cushion for the reed, but the reed is wider, so it doesn't hurt or cut into your lip when first getting started as the clarinet embouchure can. Aside from the fingerings, that's the primary difference. Once you get the embouchure right, you get a nice tone from the instrument and playing it becomes a lot more satisfying as well. I wish her well...! ;-)

Definitely! Like everyone has said, she already has experience playing a reed instrument. It is such a classic and versatile instrument with strong roots. Good luck to her!

Sax is super cool! Its a tough instrument so as long as she has a good level of determination she'll be okay. Definitely encourage her!
