Sadly, there were no humvees or APC's around back then. Armies didn't have enough horses for everyone, and wagons were reserved for supplies. Yes, armies have always marched, from the days of Rome until the First World War.

The North had, I forget, 80 or 90% of the railroads, and used them, but yep there was a lot of marching.

Yes they did. This was why pre World War 1 armies had always used drums while marching. In order to keep cadence of the soldiers marching.
