It depends on what is being washed. Linens I normally wash in hot, that includes towels. Permanent press clothing I usually wash in warm. Delicate fabrics I wash in cold. For jeans and cottons, I usually wash them in hot. It is simple..read the label on the clothing. It will tell you what temp to wash it in and how to dry it.

I wash some things in hot, like whites and really dirty things that are colorfast. And I use cold for most other things. I use the machine at my sister-in-laws next door and that's kind of what it takes to get things clean. But I rarely use the dryer, only in bad weather or for towels. Everything else hangs outside. That's how I try to save money.
