How does the average parent teach their child a language. Do they just speak to the baby until he catches on some words and works with those to build a vocabulary? How old was (s)he when he was able to start a conversation?

    It's not a proven fact but kids learning more than one language tend to speak later, like at 4 years, that's when my daughter starting differentiating her dad spoke French and I spoke english.

    Babies have been listening to their mother's speech patterns in the womb. When they are born, they can already reproduce these, which is why new mothers can identify their baby's cry.
    It does not take long for them to realise that they must imitate what mum and others in their lives do with their mouth, eyes and expressions, in order to survive. Words come later. The patterns come first.
