A sponge is actually made from a biological item, I guess you could call it a plant, that lives on the sea floor. People go down and harvest them. Sponge is very porous. It has many air pockets which can hold water. When a sponge is dipped in water, like in a bucket, these air pockets fill with the liquid. When you spueeze a sponge, it tightens these air pockets and forces out the liquid. Hope this helps, Good Luck
