It's possible the excess wool was a trait given to domestic sheep through selective breeding. I cannot find any wild sheep that have large coats like that of domestic variety. If wild sheep do have thick coats, then they most likely roam far north near the arctic circle, possibly Sweden. Maybe wool is like arm and leg hair--the more you shave, the more it grows. So if they weren't sheared, it didn't grow to unmanagable lengths.

annual praire fires scourged the land and burned the wool off the sheep. out of that came the black sheep with blacken wool.
