  • Heat causes things to expand, cooling causes them to contract. Computers run 'hot' so everything inside expands, turn it off it cools and everything contracts. Most materials fatigue over a period of time when they expand, contract, expand, contract - things like micro fractures first appear, then if it continues long enough things fall apart. Boards, chips, circuitry are all fairly fragile, with the advent of 'printed' circuitry and chips we are talking about materials that are very thin - so a micro fracture can cause damage to the system: Sleep mode is an alternative for saving power: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_mode Read the whole since you find that other deaths await your computer.
