Agreed, I think some people don't understand flagging instead.

I agree having been guilty of doing the same thing on a couple of occasions...I felt like a real goose and didn't need to be even made to look like one even more by trigger happy D/R and flagging because of a honest mistake due to over enthusiasm to answer or comment to a question and especially when I had informed the person who asked the question of my mistake ...some people REALLY need to get a life

Yes... They should NOT be downrated. Best way to fix that: For the answerer: Edit your answer, cut your comment out (cursor in answer, control-a, then control-x) and type in something like "Oops... supposed to be a comment... Please flag", then paste the comment (control-v) where you MEANT it to go. (You're percentages aren't going to be affected that much with the flagging.) Another way would be to grab the permalink for the answer (right-click on Permalink, select "Copy shortcut"), and where the comment was to go, say "Oops... Here'a my comment: " and paste the link to the answer (control-v). Then grab the permalink for THAT answer, edit YOUR mistaken answer, and in the top, say "This was meant to be a comment at " and paste THAT permalink there. Just a couple of ways I've fixed things. ;-) For the reader: You COULD simply comment on it, stating "Was this an answer or a comment?" especially if it didn't make sense as an answer. This way the answerer will get the comment in their profile, realize what happened and can fix it. No need to downrate it.

I think when a questioner makes this mistake, users will ignore it if the questioner edits the comment with a note such as <<comment deleted here>>. If the comment stays in the answer field people will flag it or downrate it because it doesn't make sense. They may do this in long threads where they don't pay attention to the questioner. Many times they downrate it thinking that it is a confused answer.

I vote "yes" give them a break.
-
Because people look for any reason to be negative.
-
I guess they aren't very patient or forgiving. I've made mistakes here and there (typos, flagging duplicates incorrectly, etc.) so I *always* cut people slack.
-
There seems little tolerance from some users. Give people a break and retain your positives.
-
Some people forget how it felt when they were new! I know I felt like a dummy, and I just wanted to fit in!
-
Good question. I think we should give them a break, why bother to DR a mistake? I am guessing that some people are just mean, others think it's a bad answer and don't realize that it's an error, or people think that so many DRs will cause it to be removed (they should be flagging versus DRing though).

Idne, I am actually going to agree with you completely on this one. I think that is petty as all hell when people do that. Also, I see it happen alot to new users, who may not have even been able to confirm their account yet, to make comments! That is just so not fair to them!

I do give them a break, and points to everyone I come across
