Well, to be honest... PROBABLY. We had a cat that pissed all over everything, and finally couldn't take her any more. I took her to the Humane Society. When they asked WHY I was bringing her in, I told them. I was told that she probably wouldn't be adopted out - they don't normally do that with pets that have problems - and she'd probably be put down within a day or so. When I got home, I told the kids that "Mama Kitty" (she'd given birth to a litter here, and we kept a couple of them, and gave the others away) went to the Humane Society and they'd see what they could do. If they'd have asked "What if they can't place her somewhere?", I'd have told them, but I don't think they did, and I prefer to think that someone, somewhere saved her from it. (So I'm probably lying to myself, too.)

I have no kids but...speaking from my own experiences when I was a kid, I think that adults should never lie to children bout anything. Children are much smarter then adults give them credit for being and they some how always know when they are bing lied to, even if they don't come out and call you a lier. They know. I remember on more then one occasion my Grandmother making up lies about what actually happened to animals in my life. One was when I was around four or five and it was about a horse that died, and I knew inside that it had died, but she would never just come out and say what was really wrong with it or even that it was dead. She would always say things like,it's sleeping for a long time. I knew there was more to the story then that but I didn't ever argue with her. I often think about that now and wonder why she just couldn't have told me the truth.
