  • The Church always taught the divinity of Christ (check out Ignatius of Antioch, Irenaeus, Tertullian , Hippolytus and Lactantius) and re-affirmed this doctrine at the council of Nicaea in more specific terminology to counter Arian heresy which was causing confusion within the Church. Constantine suggested the term "homoiousios" (of one essence), most likely at the suggestion of Hosius, the bishop of Cordova and a close personal friend. Constantine opened the session as honorary president but the theological discussions and eventual formulation of the Nicene Creed were left up to the leaders of the council.
