Would it be a bad idea to spread out sleep time? For example, if I slept for four hours, say from 4am to 8am, and then another four later in the day, say from 5pm to 9pm, would that hurt my body, or would I be fine because I'm getting the same total rest?

How rested you feel is not only determined by the length of time you sleep, but by how many times you enter REM sleep. During the night, you go through multiple cycles of sleep. REM is a stage of sleep that comes at the end of the sleep cycle. So if you cut your sleep too short, you may miss or interrupt this stage of sleep, preventing you from getting fully rested. -
