The drinking problem people worry about is actually something the people would be doing outside of college as well. It is that age group, not the college factor that makes then so likely to drink. They have just found adulthood, and are out on their own making themselves a future, and that can be a stressful transition. Drinking and partying are just part of how those people can let off steam.

College kids drink a lot, yes. But, a lot of it does have to do with hype. I graduated two years ago and everyone "worked hard, played hard" for the most part. Plus, the school tries to enforce responsible drinking behaviors. It is the only time in your life when you drink A. mostly for free and B. don't have to worry about driving. So, overall, I say that the problems associated with kids may be stereotypical hype. I also feel that the situation shouldn't be a rampant display of irresponsibility.
